Let’s see – TOPGEAR microstructure investigations

TOGEAR focuses to develop and investigate new combinations of materials and heat treatments for gears for electric vehicle power train applications as sketched in the figure on the right. To evaluate the material and best suited heat treatment combinations, e.g. systematic characterizations of the surface properties on simple bolt samples were used.
The characterization included the determination of the surface hardness, the case hardening depth or nitriding and nitrocarburizing hardening depth and the core hardness as well as the evaluation of the microstructure and the observation of the edge oxidation. By that valuable information and knowledge were gained that allowed further optimization of heat treatment processes for gears.
